The pump has a pump piston (1) adjustably guided in a pump cylinder head (2) provided on a pump housing (3). A rotary motion of a pump camshaft is changed into a translatory motion of the piston over a polygonal structure (9) for sucking and compressing fuel at high pressure. An insertion part (11) is placed within the range of a hollow-cylindrical tappet body (6). The insertion part is extended with a nose-like projection (12) into a slotted hole-like recess (13) of the tappet body. The insertion part is made of steel.
