<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent imbalance between a weight on a car side and a weight on a counterweight side occurring along with elevation of car, without using a compensation rope. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The elevator includes: the car 5 elevating in a hoistway 1; the counterweight 6 elevating by responding to the elevation of the car 5, through a main rope 4; a split-type weight placing plate 8 disposed to the counterweight 6; a split-type weight 9 put on the split-type weight placing plate 8; and a split-type weight support part 12 disposed in the hoistway 1 in which the car elevates, and supporting the split-type weight 9. The split-type weight support part 12 takes the split-type weight 9 down from the split-type weight placing part 8 and supporting the split-type weight 9 when the split-type weight 9 put on the split-type weight placing part 8 moves down together with the counterweight 6, and putting the split-type weight 9 supported thereby on the split-type weight placing part 8 when the counterweight 6 moves up.
