PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stainless steel which can remarkably relax the increase of the internal pressure of a heat pipe accompanying hydrogen generation compared with the conventional austenitic stainless steel. SOLUTION: The stainless steel for a heat pipe of a high temperature exhaust heat recovering device has a composition comprising, by mass, 16 to 30% Cr, 7 to 20% Ni, ≤0.08% C, ≤0.15% N, 0.1 to 3% Mn, ≤0.008% S and 0.1 to 5% Si, if required, comprising one or more kinds selected from ≤2% Mo, ≤3% Cu, ≤0.7% Nb and ≤1% Ti, or further comprising one or more kinds selected from ≤0.1% Y, ≤0.1% REM (rare earth metals) and ≤0.01% Ca, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities, and satisfying Cr+1.5Si≥21 (1) and 0.009Ni+0.014Mo+0.005Cu-(0.085Si+0.008Cr+0.003Mn)≤-0.25 (2).
