<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel compound having a diamantane skeleton and exhibiting large negative dielectric anisotropy and a stable liquid crystal phase. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The diamantane compound is represented by general formula (I). In the formula, T<SB>1</SB>and T<SB>2</SB>are each a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group or an aryl group; Q<SB>1</SB>and Q<SB>2</SB>are each independently an arylene group, a 1,4-cyclohexylene group, a 1,3-dioxane-2,5-diyl group or a 1,4-bicyclo[2.2.2]octylene group; at least one of Q<SB>1</SB>and Q<SB>2</SB>is a fluorine atom-bearing arylene group; L<SB>1</SB>, L<SB>2</SB>, L<SB>3</SB>and L<SB>4</SB>are each independently a noncyclic divalent group; m, p, r and w are each independently 0 or 1; and n and s are each independently 0, 1 or 2, and when they are 2, Q<SB>1</SB>and Q<SB>2</SB>can be the same or different, provided that n and s are not 0 simultaneously.
