PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a safety device of an elevator capable of more reliably detecting string-shaped foreign matter nipped between doors for opening/closing a doorway to a car. SOLUTION: A first foreign matter detecting lever 25 rotatable in a traveling direction of the car 1 is provided on a side of a rear face of the first car side door 3. A distal end part of the first foreign matter detecting lever 25 is overlapped with a safety shoe 18 provided at a distal end part of the second car side door 4 in a surface right-angled direction of both the car side doors 3 and 4. When the car 1 is traveled in a state in which the string-shaped foreign matter F is nipped between both the car side doors 3 and 4, the foreign matter detecting lever 25 is rotated since the foreign matter F is caught by the first foreign matter detecting lever 25, and thereby the rotation is detected by a rotary encoder 33 to stop the car 1 in traveling for emergency.
