Use of water soluble or alkali-soluble copolymer as a thickener for an aqueous formulation comprising: 45-55 wt.% of (meth)acrylic acid, preferably methacrylic acid; 40-50 wt.% of acrylamide and/or N-methylol and/or acrylic ester comprising ethyl (meth)acrylate, and butyl (meth)acrylate, preferably ethyl acrylate; 2-10 wt.% of a hydrophobic monomer (A); and 0.1-4 wt.% of at least one crosslinking agent, preferably ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, is claimed. Use of water soluble or alkali-soluble copolymer as a thickener for an aqueous formulation comprising: 45-55 wt.% of (meth)acrylic acid, preferably methacrylic acid; 40-50 wt.% of acrylamide and/or N-methylol and/or acrylic ester comprising ethyl (meth)acrylate, and butyl (meth)acrylate, preferably ethyl acrylate; 2-10 wt.% of a hydrophobic monomer of formula (R 1-(R 2O) m-R 3) (A); and 0.1-4 wt.% of at least one crosslinking agent, preferably ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, is claimed.
