The device i.e. steering column (31), has a steering wheel fixed at top of a steering shaft for transmitting rotation to a steering gear-box (10) that is provided with a traverse drive shaft (18). The steering shaft has a Cardan joint (16) and another Cardan joint enclosing an intermediate section (8). The drive shaft is extended by a lower extension (32) that is permanently aligned along a same axis of the drive shaft. The extension is connected to the intermediate section by one of the Cardan joints. The extension is fixed on the drive shaft by a retaining sleeve (34).
