In a small-size and low-power-consumption radio communication system formed by a base station and a communication terminal, it is possible to reduce power consumption by the communication terminal.  The base station alternately sets an active period during which a predetermined data communication is performed and an inactive period during which the predetermined data communication is not performed.  During the active period, a beacon containing information indicating the start timing of the next active period is transmitted and received.  During the inactive period, a sub-beacon containing information reporting the transmission timing of the next beacon is transmitted and received.  Upon reception of the sub-beacon, the communication terminal acquires the transmission timing when the next beacon is to be transmitted and halts the power supply to a unit associated with the radio communication function until the transmission timing.
