<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for an internal combustion engine expanding toward heavy load side an operation zone in which premixed compression self-ignition combustion can take place. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The control device for the internal combustion engine calculates load of the engine (KL) and rotation speed (NE) based on detected accelerator opening and crank angle (S300, S302), refers to an operation zone map and determines if it is in a premixed compression self-ignition combustion zone or not (S304, S306). The control device for the internal combustion engine opens both of an intake valve and an exhaust valve in a prescribed period from a later half of exhaust stroke and forms a negative overlap period (S312). The control device for the internal combustion engine controls swirl formed in a cylinder based on rotation speed and load of the engine during the negative overlap period (S314, S316, S318, S320), and controls at least one of quantity and number of times of injection of fuel to be injected into the cylinder from a first fuel injection valve and reformed (S322).
