Alginate web formation - from fibrous suspension using paper machine

A fibrous alignate suspension, e.g. calcium alginate formed e.g. by treating an aqs. alginate with a mineral salt, is converted into a web using pref. a multi-cylinder Fourdrinier machine, the pH of the suspension being maintained at =7.0. A surfactant, e.g. carbohydrate, protein, sterol, cellulose deriv. may be added together with a colouring agent and an aromatising agent. The web may be creped and shredded. The web is formed without using an adhesive.
