PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which suppresses the generation of transfer dust in the vicinity of the entrance of a transfer nip, while suppressing transfer failure caused by the transfer pressure shortage of the transfer nip, the conveyance failure of a transfer material, etc. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: a belt-like image carrier 2 which is stretched on a plurality of rollers and carries a toner image; and a transfer means which forms a transfer electric field in the transfer nip formed by a transfer opposing roller 8 being a stretching roller and a transfer roller 7 facing the transfer opposing roller through the image carrier. In the image forming apparatus, another stretching roller 6 is disposed so that the rotation locus of the image carrier on the upstream side from the transfer nip in a rotational direction is on a straight line crossing a straight line passing through the axial center of each of the transfer opposing roller and the transfer roller at 90° or nearly 90°. Further, the image forming apparatus includes: a guide member 32 which guides the transfer material, so as to bring the transfer material into contact with the image carrier on the rotation locus; and an electric field control means 41 which is provided on the downstream side from the contact start portion of the transfer material and the image carrier in the rotational direction and on the upstream side from the transfer nip in the rotational direction and forms an electric field in a direction opposite to that of the transfer electric field.
