A module 30 comprises a microspeaker 34, a microphone 38, and information storage device 40, all carried on a common substrate 32. The information storage device 40 is preferably an electronic memory, such as an EPROM, and stores data regarding a departure of the microphone 38 and/or the microspeaker 34 from specific performance characteristics. Upon interrogation, the information storage device 40 provides this data which is used to compensate for the departure. Preferably, the module 30 is incorporated into an earpiece (12, 14) having electrical connections to noise-cancelling electronic circuitry that is provided separately from the earpiece (12, 14) and may be housed in a separate pod or incorporated within a cellular telephone. A method of producing ambient noise-cancelling earphones is also provided, in which the components on the module 30 are classified inter alia by feeding known signals to the microspeaker 34 and noting the response of the microphone 38.
