PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a charging device capable of avoiding, despite a simple configuration, accumulation of foreign matter on the surface of a shaftless charging roller formed from a hollow elastic material. SOLUTION: The charging device has the charging roller 4 formed from the hollow elastic material with no rotation support shaft. The charging roller 4 is disposed in contact with the surface of a photoreceptor drum 2 and rotates following the rotation of the photoreceptor drum 2. One end 4a of the charging roller 4 is an inclining cam face 11. The other end 4b thereof is forced in the direction of arrow A by a coil spring 15. Thereby the cam face 11 comes into contact with the end face guide portion 21a of the holding frame 21. When the charging roller 4 rotates following the rotation of the photoreceptor drum 2, the inclining cam face 11 is firmly pressed against the end face guide portion 21a and, at the same time, the charging roller 4 reciprocates in axial directions (directions of arrows A and A') while keeping in contact with the photoreceptor drum 2.
