The absolute value encoder (60) has an incremental encoder (140) and a battery for maintaining the absolute position information during voltage drop. The incremental encoder has a laser diode (LD), an encoding wheel and a photo diode (PD). A determination device (100) is electrically connected with the incremental encoder and delivers a control signal to the incremental encoder. A comparator (160) is electrically connected with the incremental encoder and delivers an output signal to the incremental encoder. An independent claim is included for a method for maintaining the absolute position information during voltage drop using an incremental encoder and a battery.
