<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mercury discharge device for introducing a small amount of mercury into a fluorescent lamp accurately and with reproducibility, without requiring addition of a second component. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The mercury discharge device for introducing a small amount of mercury into a fluorescent lamp is formed of a metallic container, such that at least houses powder of a mercury discharge compound selected from among an intermetallic compounds Ti<SB>x</SB>Zr<SB>y</SB>Hg<SB>z</SB>, of which x and y are in the range 0 to 13, the total (x+y) is in the range 3 to 13, and z is 1 or 2, and can hold the powder particles of the mercury discharge compound, even though it is not closed completely.
