<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a picture reading apparatus which is suitable to the displaying of read picture data that is performed in its displaying means. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The picture reading apparatus 1, which displays picture data read from manuscripts by a reading means 12 in a displaying means 30, has a selecting means for selecting one of first and second modes. In the first mode, the apparatus displays the picture data in the displaying means 30 after the reading means 12 reads all the manuscripts in the apparatus. In the second mode, the apparatus displays the picture data in the displaying means 30 every reading of a sheet of manuscript which is performed by the reading means 12.
