PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight and an optical sheet, which can improve utilization efficiency of light and front brightness, and can suppress the occurrence of brightness unevenness. SOLUTION: The backlight includes a surface light source and the optical sheet 15 laid on the surface light source. A plurality of reflecting particles 162 in a reflection polarization layer 160 of the optical sheet 15 are aligned in one direction. A lens layer 170 of the optical sheet 15 includes a plurality of micro lenses 172. The optical sheet 15 transmits a polarized light component having an electric field vector perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the reflecting particles 162, and reflects the polarized light component having the electric field vector in parallel with the longitudinal direction. The reflected polarized light component returns to the surface light source, and enters into the optical sheet 15 from the surface light source again. Because of that, the utilization efficiency of the light is improved. Furthermore, by synergy effect of an action of the reflecting polarized light layer 160 and a light collection action of a lens layer, the front brightness is improved, and the brightness uneavenness is suppressed.
