A honeycomb structure having a honeycomb unit that has the configuration of multiple cells extending from one end face to the other end face along the longitudinal direction thereof partitioned by a cell wall. The honeycomb structure is characterized by the following. The honeycomb unit contains 61 to 70 mass% of zeolite, 15 to 25 mass% of inorganic fiber and 10 to 20 mass% of alumina other than that contained in the zeolite and inorganic fiber. The honeycomb unit has an opening ratio of 57% or higher. When the zeolite content, x(mass%) of the honeycomb unit is below 66 mass%, the opening ratio, y(%) is (0.55x + 30) or below. When the zeolite content, x(mass%) of the honeycomb unit is 66 mass% or higher, the opening ratio, y(%) is (-0.25x + 82.8) or below.
