PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL element which can achieve adequately high luminescent efficiency and usable life. SOLUTION: In the organic EL element comprising a substrate 10, a first electrode layer 12 and a second electrode layer 18 situated in a mutually opposing manner on one side of the substrate 10, and a luminescent layer 20 situated between the electrode layers, one of the first electrode layer 12 and the second electrode layer 18 is a hole injection electrode layer and the other is an electron injection electrode layer, and an organic thin film layer 30 is formed between the luminescent layer 20 and the electron injection electrode layer, and a modified section 16 is formed in the luminescent layer 20 in bias toward the electron injection electrode layer, and the organic thin film layer 30 and the modified section 16 contain an organic polymer which is different from an organic polymer constituting the luminescent layer 20 and has an energy gap of 3.5 eV or greater, and a total film thickness of the organic thin film layer 30 and the modified section 16 is 0.1 to 5 nm.
