<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent individual liquid crystal cells from being damaged by polishing liquid when thinning a TFT substrate and an opposed substrate constituting a small liquid crystal cell by polishing. Ž<P>SOLUTION: Liquid crystal is sealed simultaneously into a plurality of liquid crystal cells of a rectangular substrate having the plurality of liquid crystal cells aligned thereon, which is separated from a mother substrate, and sealed with a sealant 30. Thereafter, the rectangular substrate is dipped in the polishing liquid to polish the outside of the rectangular substrate. The sealant 30 has the role as a sealant for individual liquid crystal cells and the role as a seal to the polishing liquid. For preventing the sealant 30 from being sucked between the TFT substrate and the opposed substrate to cause defects, a stopper 50 is formed between the sealant 30 and a sealing material 20 of each individual liquid crystal cell on the outside of an area surrounded by the sealing material 20.
