<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a diagnosis even in cold time of an internal combustion engine. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The air-fuel ratio of an air-fuel mixture is changed by changing the target air-fuel ratio, and abnormality of an air-fuel ration sensor is diagnosed based on a response of the air-fuel ratio sensor at this time. At the cold time of the internal combustion engine, the target air-fuel ratio R and L at warm time is corrected to R' and L' to be applied at the cold time so that the air-fuel ratio of exhaust gas supplied to the air-fuel ratio sensor becomes equal to the warm time.
