The device has a mean power controller (1) for calculating mean power. A result obtained by the controller is used by a comparator (3) which establishes a set-point (111) for modification of an input signal power (100) based on a power limit stored in an audio system. An amplifier (5) filters and uses the set-point to dynamically and automatically smooth variations of sound power. The power limit is not changed by an auditor, and inhibits passing of maximum volume when listening.
