Olefines are hydrated at elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of a heavy metal sulphate in aqueous solution or suspension. It is preferred to use temperatures above 200 DEG C., and pressures above 100 atmospheres. The process may be carried out continuously or otherwise, and unchanged olefine may be returned to the process after removal of the alcohol produced. The examples illustrate the use of aqueous zinc sulphate solution in the conversion of ethylene, propylene, and a mixture of a - and b -butylene to the corresponding alcohols.
