The method involves gripping and detecting an edge of a machined plate (11) over length of the plate under an adjusting angle of 45 degrees by an optical measurement arrangement (13). Resulting measuring value of the measurement arrangement is evaluated. The edge of the plate is gripped such that a contact line between the edge to be gripped and an even supporting surface is examined and brightness values resulting along the contact line are detected based on light gap sections. The detected brightness values are evaluated such that grey shades above a certain amount are accessed as white. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for measuring edge chipping after or during machining of plates made of coated or uncoated materials (2) a computer program programmed to execute a method for measuring edge chipping after or during machining of plates.
