PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cobalt compound with high electric conductivity without depending on a dissolution and precipitation process in an electrolyte solution. SOLUTION: The cobalt compound comprises a crystal phase having a crystal structure of a space group R3m structure, and at least a part of the crystal phase has a spacing of the (003) faces of 13.8 Å or more. In a method for producing a positive electrode for alkaline storage batteries in which nickel hydroxide is filled in a substrate having electron conductivity as a positive electrode active material, the cobalt hydroxide is oxidized by heating, at 60°C or higher, a mixture containing an aqueous solution containing sodium ions and cobalt hydroxide such that the atomic ratio (Na/Co) of Na to Co is 0.5 or more, and the cobalt compound obtained by the oxidation treatment is mixed with the nickel hydroxide and filled in the substrate having electron conductivity to form the positive electrode for alkaline storage batteries.
