PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper money processor and a paper money handling device equipped with a paper money detection mechanism for solving failures in a batch when an optical sensor is used as a means for detecting the presence of paper money in a storage container. SOLUTION: The paper money processor includes a paper money detection means 50 for detecting the presence of paper money S on a loading pedestal 21 at a raising location on an inner wall 25 of at least one of storage containers 20, and the paper money detection means includes: a turning lever 51 having a lever body 52 whose right place is journaled by the inner wall so as to be movable up and down, action pieces 53 and 54 projected out of the lever body, and faced to the upper face of the loading pedestal, and a light shielding piece 55; an elastic member 60 for elastically biasing the turning lever downward all the time; and an optical sensor 61 for detecting the light shielding piece when the action pieces are pushed up according as at least one paper sheet is loaded on the loading pedestal.
