PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To thin a coating film without obstructing productivity or causing film thickness irregularities on a base material surface, for a continuously traveling base material. SOLUTION: A 3-roll coater adjusts the liquid amount of a coating liquid 3, supplied to a pickup roll 4, by a metering roll 5, supplies the adjusted coating liquid to an applicator roll 6, brings the applicator roll 6 supplied with the coating liquid into contact with the continuously traveling base material 1, and coats the surface of the base material 1 with the coating liquid. In the 3-roll coater, the applicator roll 6 has a diameter of≤150 mm, the coating liquid of the same composition as the coating liquid to be coated in the 3-roll coater is precoated by a coating roll on the upstream side in the traveling direction of the base material 1 of the 3-roll coater, and the coating liquid is applied to the base material 1 by the 3-roll coater while the precoated coating liquid on the base material 1 is in a liquid state.
