<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic encoder for detecting the moving direction of a magnet while maintaining miniaturization. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A magnetic encoder includes a magnetic sensor consisting of a magnet 11 wherein a plurality of magnet poles composed of N-poles and S-poles are alternately magnetized along the moving direction and a plurality of magnetoresistance effect elements R11-R23 oppositely disposed in the vicinity of the magnet 11 along the moving direction. The plurality of magnetoresistance effect elements R11-R23 are connected in series, and the one end is connected with a power supply terminal T1 and the other end is connected with a ground terminal T2. An intermediate point which divides the plurality of magnetoresistance effect elements R11-R23 into the same number is set for an output terminal TO, and the magnetoresistance effect elements R11-R13 at the power supply terminal T1 side from the intermediate point and the magnetoresistance effect elements R21-R23 at the ground terminal T2 side are disposed alternately along the moving direction. The magnetic encoder detects the moving direction of the magnet 11 by detecting whether the pulse voltage output from the output terminal TO increases or decreases with moving of the magnet 11.
