<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make the contrast of an image on a lateral electric field type liquid crystal device lower when it is viewed obliquely in a narrow-viewing-angle display mode by optimizing a driving voltage of viewing-angle control pixels with respect to relation to display pixels. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal device has, in a plane area between an element substrate and an opposite substrate, a plurality of display pixel areas and a viewing-angle control pixel area wherein dark display is provided in a front direction of a display screen and luminance varies in an oblique direction of the display screen corresponding to the oblique direction. Pixel electrodes and a common electrode for driving a liquid crystal layer are provided in the display pixel areas and viewing-angle control pixel area of the element substrate. When the liquid crystal layer in the viewing-angle control pixel area is driven, a voltage applied between the pixel electrodes and common electrode in the viewing-angle control pixel area is made higher than a voltage applied between the pixel electrodes and common electrode in the display pixel areas. Consequently, the contrast of the image viewed obliquely in the narrow viewing-angle display mode is made lower. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT</p> |
