<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem of selecting a prediction mode of low encoding efficiency. <P>SOLUTION: The prediction mode selecting apparatus includes: a feature value calculation part for calculating a feature value from image data of the processing object block of an input image and its adjacent block; a similarity degree calculation part for calculating a similarity degree corresponding to a prediction direction on the basis of the respective feature values of adjacent blocks positioned in a plurality of prediction directions from a reference point inside the processing object block and the processing object block; a prediction direction selection part for selecting the prediction directions corresponding to the prescribed number of similarity degrees in the descending order of similarity degrees of the plurality of prediction directions; a predicted image generation part for generating predicted image data of the processing object block corresponding to the prescribed number of selected prediction directions; an evaluation value calculation part for calculating an evaluation value for determining the prediction mode on the basis of the predicted image data corresponding to prescribed number of prediction directions and the image data of the processing object block; and a prediction mode decision part for determining the prediction mode for the processing object block on the basis of the calculated evaluation value. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
