PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air conditioner for a railway vehicle achieved in a refrigerating cycle for keeping discharge pressure at overloading within operation pressure range without stopping a compressor. SOLUTION: A solenoid valve 6 opening and closing a bypass circuit is provided in bypass piping 101 connecting a discharge side of the compressor 1 and a heat transfer tube of an evaporator 4. When the discharge pressure of the compressor 1 reaches allowable pressure and a pressure switch 9 is operated, the solenoid valve 6 is opened, and one part of a high-temperature/high-pressure gas coolant of the compressor 1 is made to bypass a condenser 2 and sent to the evaporator 4. Since the bypassed high-temperature/high-pressure gas coolant is lowered in temperature and pressure by a decompression cooling function in the evaporator 4, a rise of the discharge pressure of the compressor 1 at overloading can be suppressed without raising an intake gas temperature of the compressor 1, the stop of in-vehicle air conditioning service caused by the operation stop of the compressor 1 is avoided, and a rapid rise in in-vehicle temperature can be prevented.
