PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing an optically functional material, which is an easier technology than a conventional one of imparting a photocatalytic function to a substrate of an aluminum material, and can realize photocatalytic activity under visible light in contrast to a photocatalyst mainly containing a metal oxide such as a titanium oxide. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing the optically functional material, which imparts a photocatalytic function to the substrate of aluminum or an aluminum alloy includes: anodizing the substrate by electrolysis in an electrolytic solution with the use of an alternating current or a pulsed current to form a porous anodic oxide film on aluminum or the aluminum alloy; and subsequently, immersing it into an aqueous solution of a metal salt containing a metal which forms a compound having a photocatalytic function having visible light responsiveness, or electrolyzing it in the aqueous solution of the metal salt so as to form and fix a photocatalyst in the porous anodic oxide film.
