PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light source for ultraviolet ray irradiation in which a rod-shaped discharge lamp with a depression so as not to project a tip from the outer surface of an arc tube is arranged in a water-cooling jacket, in which a knowledge is obtained of a relationship of the direction of the portion where the tip of the arc tube is formed and devitrification of that portion, and the devitrification is prevented on that portion where the tip of the arc tube is formed. SOLUTION: The discharge lamp is arranged in a cooling jacket so that the portion where the tip of the arc tube is formed may be at the lower part in gravity direction. Further, it is desirable that the portion with the tip of the arc tube formed is in a±45°range with the perpendicular direction from the center of the lamp as 0°. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
