Method for determining the state of wear of the brake linings of an automobile and system for indicating this state to the driver

The method involves determining a wear condition (30) of a brake lining of a motor vehicle by measuring permanent data relative to a braking system of the vehicle and by measuring variable data relative to displacement of the vehicle. Balance of wear (32) is determined by comparing the wear condition with a predefined braking capacity (31) of the brake lining. A distance i.e. kilometric distance (34), traveled by the vehicle with the brake lining is determined. Remaining distance is evaluated based on the balance of wear and the determined distance already traveled by the vehicle. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for determining a risk of fading of a brake lining (2) a system for indicating a remaining usage capacity of a brake lining of a motor vehicle (3) a system for determining a risk of fading.
