An analysation instrument includes a flow source to produce a flow of particles to be analysed. The flow source is adapted to direct the flow of particles through an inspection zone. An optical arrangement including a source of electromagnetic radiation is adapted to converge the electromagnetic radiati on as substantially coplanar, substantially radially symmetric electromagnetic radiation towards the inspection zone.
