PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remove an obstacle A appearing at a working face without excavating a vertical shaft during tunnel excavation using a shield machine. SOLUTION: The shield machine in use is constituted to provide the front end of a shield cylinder 1 with a stopper part 16a against which the rear face of a radial outer end of a cutter head 2 abuts, and to mount an advancing/retreating drive source 7 of the cutter head 2 to a bulkhead 3. When the cutter head 2 reaches the obstacle A, the shield cylinder 1 is advanced in the released state of fixing of the bulkhead 3 to the shield cylinder 1, and the cutter head 2 is enclosed in the front end of the shield cylinder 1. A worker enters a space 5 between the cutter head 2 and the bulkhead 3 and performs removal work of the obstacle A. The cutter head 2 is then pulled backward by the advancing/retreating drive source 7, and the bulk head 3 is advanced into a predetermined fixed position to the shield cylinder 1 using the stopper part 16a as a reaction receiver.
