PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a safety device of an elevator for preventing accident, by surely detecting coming off or overlapping of a rope, without misrecognizing, since when the operation is continued in a state such that a main rope and a compensation rope of the elevator come off from sheave grooves due to vibration, such as, earthquakes or overlapped with each other, there is a high possibility of this leading to serious accidents. SOLUTION: The safety device of the elevator is equipped with: a rope coming-off prevention device, provided in the vicinity part of a sheave and/or a deflector sheave of an elevator hoisting machine, and a detecting means for detecting the displacement of the rope coming-off prevention; and the detecting means is constituted such that when the displacement of the rope coming off prevention device is detected for a fixed time, the elevator is stopped.
