The assembly (10) has an upper shell (26) including a fixed part (28) fixed on a lower shell (24), and a movable part (30) mounted slidingly with respect to the fixed part. One of the movable part and the fixed part includes an ejectable masking portion (48) to be ejected radially in case of axial compression of the upper shell. The fixed part includes a retain portion i.e. rear section (34), fixed on a steering column (4) near a flywheel (6). The upper shell includes links (64, 66) for holding the masking portion on the retain portion after ejection.
