The aim of the invention is to improve the security of a transmission of data to an electrical field appliance by simple means. To this end, a method is provided, whereby an electronic request is received by the field appliance (10), said request announcing a transmission of the data to the electrical field appliance, and, as a reaction to the request, a random character string is generated in the field appliance (10) and emitted from a local output device of the field appliance (10). The random character string is received by the external data processing device (14a, 14b) and the data to be transmitted is linked to the random character string in the external data processing device (14a, 14b), generating a data packet. The data packet is transmitted to the field appliance (10) which carries out a check of the transmitted data packet using the random character string, and in the event of a positive result, extracts the data from the data packet, and transmits said data to a storage device of the field appliance (10).
