The rotor e.g. 2-pole rotor (1), has a set of magnet pockets (2) receiving a set of permanent magnets (3) forming magnetic poles (4). Each pole has a d-axis in a pole center (5) and a q-axis in a pole gap (6), where axes are anisotropic. The permanent magnets are arranged in the magnet pockets such that both 2-pole and 4-pole rotors are realizable with the axes. The magnet pockets are arranged next to each other in a circumferential direction with different distances to each other. An independent claim is also included for a permanent magnet-excited electrical synchronous machine comprising a stator.
