摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid the wasteful replacement of an ignition plug by accurately estimating the gap length thereof, which is increased stepwise when the consumed volume of the electrode is increased, according to the operating conditions of an engine. SOLUTION: The quantities of discharges for each discharge voltage and for each electrode temperature are counted, respectively, according to the rotational speed and the load of the engine, the consumed volumes of the electrode resulting from the discharge voltage and the electrode temperature are calculated from the counted values, respectively, and a total consumed volume is calculated by adding both consumed volumes (S1-S10). The calculated total consumed volume is converted into the gap length which is increased stepwise according to an increase in the consumed volume.
