A storage device and a method for controlling the spindle motor of the storage device are provided to calculate current amount simply based on the difference and ratio between measured and reference temperatures. A storage device comprises a temperature and voltage measuring part(101a), a current amount limit output part(101e), and an application current control part. The temperature and voltage measuring part measures the internal temperature of the device and the power supply voltage supplied to a spindle motor(109). The current amount limit output part computes a current amount limit value for limiting the current amount applied to the spindle motor based on the power supply voltage. The application current control part controls the current amount applied to the spindle motor not to exceed the current amount limit value.
