A printer has a platen roller (22), a print head (12) for discharging ink from a nozzle hole toward a printing medium held on the platen roller (22), a maintenance mechanism (13) for cleaning the print head (12), and a discharged ink receiving section (18) for absorbing and retaining ink discharged and discarded by spitting operation from the print head (12). The discharged ink receiving section (18) is placed at a position on the opposite side of the platen roller (22) from the maintenance mechanism (13). The discharged ink receiving section (18) has a replaceably installed absorption pad. When printing is suspended, the print head (12) moves to a position facing the discharged ink receiving section (18) and performs spitting operation to discharge and discard ink in the nozzle. ® KIPO & WIPO 2009
