The generator (10) has a potential transformer (12) for producing a high voltage, and high voltage outputs (35, 38) connected with the potential transformer. An air ionization device is connected to the high voltage outputs. A monitoring device (88) is provided for separately monitoring an output current that flows by each of the high voltage outputs of the generator, where the generator is automatically disconnectable during the excess of a maximum value of the output current. Each high output voltage is assigned to sensor elements (31, 32), which are connected with a comparing element (58).
