PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the number of components and simplify a structure in a self-leveling type hydraulic shock absorber. SOLUTION: A piston 16 to which a piston rod 17 is connected is fitted into a cylinder 2 filled with oil. With respect to the extension/contraction of the piston rod 17, a damping force is generated by damping force generation mechanisms 21, 22, and a vehicle height is adjusted by giving and receiving oil between the cylinder 2 and an oil tank 9 via an annular oil passage 32 between the cylinder 2 and a separator tube 3 by a self-leveling means S. A reservoir 8 and the oil tank 9 are arranged at upper and lower sides of the outer peripheral part of the cylinder 2, and the annular oil passage 32 for connecting the self-leveling means S and the oil tank 9 is formed of the separator tube 3.
