PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To display a character with a background added to its external portion in displaying a character on a screen. SOLUTION: A character output device comprises a character memory 30 for storing character data indicative of a character pattern, constituted of dot data of a plurality of dots, arranged in horizontal and vertical directions; a character memory controller 60 for reading out the dot data of the character data from the character memory 30, one horizontal line at a time; and a shift register 81, in which a dot data string including the dot data for one horizontal line read out is stored and which sequentially outputs the stored dot data, dot by dot. The character memory controller 60 stores background dot data in the region of a predetermined number of dots from the head of the shift register 81, and stores the dot data for the one horizontal line, read out in the region shifted from the head of the shift register 81 by a predetermined number of dots.
