PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet material feeder equipped with a double feeding preventive mechanism, and suppressing separating of sheet material and sliding of the sheet material during carrying without providing a peculiar mechanism. SOLUTION: The sheet material feeder comprises a separation nip which is an abutting portion between a feed roller 11 and a separation roller 12, and a toque limiter 12b, in a feeding/separating portion. The torque limiter 12b stops the separation roller 12 when a plurality of the sheet material enter the separation nip, and piles up the sheet material from a second sheet material except for the uppermost sheet material abutting on a feed roller 11 in the separation nip. The feed roller 11 is rotated in a reversing direction during the uppermost sheet material is nipped by the separation nip, thereby separating the sheet material from the second sheet material from the separation roller 12 rotating by following the feed roller 11. The uppermost sheet material nipped by the separation nip can carry the separation nip to a downstream side in a carrying direction by rotating the feed roller 11 in a normal rotating direction again.
