A pneumatic paintball marker (20) has, for example, a sleeve (36) that controls the passage of air through the longitudinal barrel (22) or opening (27) within the marker (20). By sequentially filling separate chambers defined within the opening (27) and the sleeve (36), the sleeve (36) is able to translate axially through the opening (27) in a sequential manner. When the sleeve (36) is in a forward position, air is caused to be released through the barrel (22), propelling the paintball (29). A sear member (37) engages the sleeve (36) and prevents the sleeve (36) from inadvertently moving to a forward position. Air filling the chambers returns the sleeve (36) to the loading position.
