PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the lowering of the temperature of a catalyst during the deceleration of a vehicle by preventing a deceleration feeling from being varied by the regeneration of energy while reducing a pump loss during the deceleration of the vehicle. SOLUTION: An acceleration/deceleration controller of an engine comprises: deceleration state detection means S12, S13 for detecting whether the vehicle is in a deceleration state or not during the operation of the engine; a catalyst temperature lowering suppressing means S16 for suppressing the lowering of a catalyst temperature by reducing the intake air amount of the engine by an intake air amount variable mechanism; a first pump loss reduction means S16 for reducing the pump loss of the engine, which is produced by reducing the intake air amount, by early closing the closing timing of an intake valve, which is apart from a bottom dead center, by an intake valve opening/closing timing variable mechanism; and an energy collecting means S15 for collecting, as a regenerative energy, the kinetic energy of the engine equivalent to the reduced pump loss.
