PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine an interpolation start point and gradient thereof, and to prevent a striped pattern from being generated without causing flicker, etc. even when a distance between grayscale change points is significantly large. SOLUTION: When an amount of change of an input signal Y is less than or equal to a threshold value TH, in other words, when the amount of change in the value Y1 obtained by dividing a value obtained by adding 1/2 the threshold value TH to the input signal by the threshold value is less than or equal to 1, the interpolation start point and the gradient thereof for smoothing changes are detected before and after the change point. Since a region B is shorter than a region A, the interpolation start point in the region A becomes a point 201 obtained by subtracting 1/2 the number of pixels in the region B from the change point between the region A and the region B, that is, a coordinate value given by 14-(12/2)=8, and the gradient is calculated by dividing the number of pixels in the region B which is shorter of two contact regions by the threshold value TH/quantized value QB (4, here). Then, the polarity of the gradient is positive when the input signal increases before and after the change point and is negative when it decreases.
